Apparently I'm living in a cave or something, but there's this thing called "RaceFail09" that is, allegedly, sweeping sci fi fandom like a hurricane (or at least that's what the scale of the hype leads me to believe), but you know, for all the links I've followed and all the "brief summaries" I've read...I really don't get what it's all about or why it happened or, really, what the hell is going on. It was recently trotted out in a Star Trek forum, and most of us there gave a huge collective "what the frak!?" because we'd never even heard of it before.
Can anyone, anyone here enlighten me? In Plain English? Without a ginormous list of links that go to ginormous discussions I don't have the time to read? Please? _________________

Well, I haven't followed it, but since I have Elizabeth Bear's LJ on my blog reader I saw some of the first posts on the topic, since she was involved in some of the early discussions at least. It looks like the link you posted summarizes what's been going on pretty well as far as I know. _________________ Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline. |

I saw mention of this on John Scalzi's blog. Then there was a lady writing about why we (assuming we are writers) should write about People of Color but that we would get it wrong and people would be mad at us. I don't understand any of it. Not sure I even want to. |

I revisited E-Bear's blog and found this. I really don't think you'll want to dig deeper into this discussion, Pat. It sounds like you would be stuck reading flame wars for months (though there may be some thoughtful posts among the verbal abuse). _________________ Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline. |

Oh yeah, the thread in the Trek community quickly devolved into a 300+ comment flame war of epic proportions; I spent too much time reading that and the only conclusion I was able to form was "man, people are reading WAY too much into Star Trek." *l* _________________

I found a couple links with a few timelines, but Snacky bear's breakdown was by far the easiest to read,
the whole situation reeks of ridiculous ridiculosity _________________ Having a pet rat is like having a dance studio next to a marble factory; hilarity is bound to ensue...it's only a matter of time.

Wow... just read some of the posts - I'm not a LJ-er - and frankly the whole thing seems rather ridiculous. Seems like people were posting before thinking things through and inflaming other people through doing so... Makes me glad I don't have a LJ to be honest! _________________ Skarla

Since I couldn't figure out the topic of this discussion, I have another question. What's an LJ? _________________ Divers allways go down .oO( ) |

LiveJournal. Apparently they keep a community going, and now they're all yelling at each other over something silly.
hm. I've never even talked to somebody from blogspot, I guess blogs are more separate than livejournals _________________ Having a pet rat is like having a dance studio next to a marble factory; hilarity is bound to ensue...it's only a matter of time.

That's true - LJ is kinda like a half-arsed social network. |
