Should I name the ship Cerulean Sky or Shades of Blue? I can't decide.....

The first ship was easy being that I dreamt her. She's the Elsa Maru, a small one man shuttle/cargo runner. But the bigger ship, with it's crew of four - it's still nameless!

Yeah, I must admit I keep returning to this topic simply because the ship name intrigued me. More more more. Ummm... please?

I'm not quite comfortable posting any of my writing yet as it's been about 10 years since I've written anything other than bad bad poetry (usually on bar napkins I might add). But this story is very much stuck in my head! Although I have a serious plot problem. I know it opens with a first person torture scene after my main character is captured by government soldiers. (She is also incredibly nameless, which for me is very odd. I just keep referring to her as the vice runner (the story title at the moment - she smuggles alcohol, caffeine, sugar, chocolate along with her legit cargo of herbs/spices/medicines), but at some point other characters will have to refer to her by name!) After the first scene, it flashes back to when the four main characters met. The vice runner (with her small cargo ship, the Elsa Maru) being recruited by the 3 rebels/weapon smugglers (they have names!) on the Cerulean Sky. Currently though, I have no idea how they get captured *L*. Things don't look good for the rebellion though (especially since every time I use the word rebellion I get Star Wars flashbacks). So far it's just fun to work on. Been a looooonggg time.

I like it (the idea behind the story)! I hope you come up with a name. It can become quite frustrating. Personally, if the name doesn't come into my head before I start writing, it takes its own sweet time in surfacing. I wrote a first person story a while back that I decided to change into third person... took longer than I liked for the main character's name to come to me. Hope yours pops up soon!

Why not keep her (character, not the ship) nameless? If it is in first person you can work around it a couple ways:

1) "...so-and-so called my name..." etc;
2) Use a title, nickname, or appelation (I've been hacking out a character known simply as "(The) Professor" for the last seven years);
3) The "hey you!" method...in otherwords, just skip over the parts of speech where people would address you by name or use generic catch alls.

I have become obsessed with the idea...I love it so much! Especially for Fantasy or Science Fiction where so much importance seems to be placed on names and their meaning or power. Besides, in first person wouldn't it normally be "I" or "me" any ways?

Actually, only the prologue is in first person and the reader isn't supposed to know for sure who it is. The rest of the chapters are that whole omnipresent thing (my mind is gone right blank, I think that is the term I need). I did name her. In fact, it's been going pretty well. Worked on it quite a bit while I was on vacation.

How about you mix the two?

Cerulean Blue

or...

Shades of Sky

A totally randome one...

The Rotund Mariner.

Meh. :?
