So... I know I haven't been around, but in the last couple of days the amount of spam registrations has been just ridiculous. Please don't activate the accounts from the e-mails, check the info on them first. I just banned the e-mail domain most of the registrations from the last few days so that should help for a while, but I'l like to keep the spam accounts to a minimum. They use them to get more hits on google (even if the member list is visible to registered users only, is it?) so that keeps more of the junk coming in.

I admin another forum as well and I like to check the IPs and addresses with Stop Forum Spam:
http://www.stopforumspam.com/search

It's a VERY nifty tool for board admins.

I'll try to delete most of the dummy accounts, but it'll take a while. Just in September there are over 500 of these spam accounts... So please, please, please think twice before cliking that e-mail link. There's a reason the registrations are required to be activated by an admin. :)

*gets off his soap box*

Just realized that admins can't view the inactive members to approve them (unless it's just me?) so I guess you have to activate them via the link unless you're a super admin? In which case forget my earlier rant... I guess we're stuck with the spam accounts?

I'll check out that link you posted. I have all the new member accounts going straight into my spam folder. I never activate an account unless the person e-mails me and asks.

However, I would LOVE to stop the spammers from creating an account at all. I know we get hundreds, if not thousands, a month.

Wait. . . so you are saying someone should go in and delete all the inactive dummy accounts? Oh dear lord. That sounds like a very trying job.

The inactive ones are fine, they don't show up on the member list, but the activated ones are full of spam links. I've been deleting the ones that have URLs, but even with those it's a looot of work. *lol*

Hmmmm. Ok, I've been deleting spam accounts, but I think most of the ones I deleted were inactive. I will have to create a non-super user account so I can see the active ones more easily and concentrate on deleting those.

Hopefully there won't be any new registrations, then. I certainly am not activating them.

I just looked in my spam folder this morning. I clear it out several times a day. I noticed that the textual confirmation actually does work about 90% of the time, but when you are getting 100 new registrations a day that 10% adds up fast!

I changed the textual confirmation on the day we were doing this and we have only had 3 new registrations since then (and they sort of look legit, maybe, but I will not activate until they e-mail). Maybe my new questions stymied the spam bots!

Or it could be that we banned a lot of those bad e-mails. Either way, I'm happy!
