Let's get some nominations going for the August Book of the Month! What's hanging out in your TBR pile that you should move to the top?

This thread will be open for nominations up to Wednesday, July 18th. You can nominate books by replying to this message, or by PM to the Book Club Coordinator (Lannie) who will add them here for you.

The book should ideally be available in mass market paperback in both the US and the UK, but these days, if it's available in both a book version and an ebook version I think that should do (Please let me know if that's not adequate, because I'm about to nom a book that's available in hardcover and Kindle ebook). Please include title, author, price and a bit of a blurb in your post or PM (you can look at previous nomination threads if you don't know what I mean). If you don't have time to look up the information or aren't sure what to include, you can just PM me the title/author and I'll find out for you.

Voting will then be open for one week and then people will have one week to find the book before August 1.

Title: Thieftaker (Thieftaker Chronicles)
Author: D.B. Jackson

Price: $13.85 Hardcover or $14.81 Kindle (Amazon.com) / £14.52
Pages: 336

Product Description:

Boston, 1767: In D.B. Jackson's Thieftaker, revolution is brewing as the British Crown imposes increasingly onerous taxes on the colonies, and intrigue swirls around firebrands like Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty. But for Ethan Kaille, a thieftaker who makes his living by conjuring spells that help him solve crimes, politics is for others…until he is asked to recover a necklace worn by the murdered daughter of a prominent family.

Suddenly, he faces another conjurer of enormous power, someone unknown, who is part of a conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of power in the turbulent colony. His adversary has already killed—and not for his own gain, but in the service of his powerful masters, people for whom others are mere pawns in a game of politics and power. Ethan is in way over his head, and he knows it. Already a man with a dark past, he can ill afford to fail, lest his livelihood be forfeit. But he can't stop now, for his magic has marked him, so he must fight the odds, even though he seems hopelessly overmatched, his doom seeming certain at the spectral hands of one he cannot even see.

Title: Robopocalypse
Author: Daniel H. Wilson

Price: $10.85 paperback/$14.20 Kindle (Amazon.com) / £5.59
Pages: 416

Product Description:

In this terrifying tale of humanity’s desperate stand against a robot uprising, Daniel H. Wilson has written the most entertaining sci-fi thriller in years.

Not far into our future, the dazzling technology that runs our world turns against us. Controlled by a childlike—yet massively powerful—artificial intelligence known as Archos, the global network of machines on which our world has grown dependent suddenly becomes an implacable, deadly foe. At Zero Hour—the moment the robots attack—the human race is almost annihilated, but as its scattered remnants regroup, humanity for the first time unites in a determined effort to fight back. This is the oral history of that conflict, told by an international cast of survivors who experienced this long and bloody confrontation with the machines. Brilliantly conceived and amazingly detailed, Robopocalypse is an action-packed epic with chilling implications about the real technology that surrounds us.

Title: The Dragon's Path (The Dagger and The Coin, Book 1)
Author: Daniel Abraham

Price: $10.19 paperback/$9.99 Kindle (Amazon.com) / £6.29
Pages: 592

Product Description:

All paths lead to war...

Marcus' hero days are behind him. He knows too well that even the smallest war still means somebody's death. When his men are impressed into a doomed army, staying out of a battle he wants no part of requires some unorthodox steps.

Cithrin is an orphan, ward of a banking house. Her job is to smuggle a nation's wealth across a war zone, hiding the gold from both sides. She knows the secret life of commerce like a second language, but the strategies of trade will not defend her from swords.

Geder, sole scion of a noble house, has more interest in philosophy than in swordplay. A poor excuse for a soldier, he is a pawn in these games. No one can predict what he will become.

Falling pebbles can start a landslide. A spat between the Free Cities and the Severed Throne is spiraling out of control. A new player rises from the depths of history, fanning the flames that will sweep the entire region onto The Dragon's Path-the path to war.
