I have been reading like a maniac for the past month! I got so many good books for Christmas! But I think the best so far has been Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. It's a first book by this author, but doesn't feel like one. It's very well written. And it's not very long compared to most fantasy books - right around 300 pages, iirc.

When I first started it, I was a little put off because it's very gruesome. The protagonist is more of an anti-hero. He has no scruples (or very few). This is a book about revenge on the surface, but it goes way deeper than that. I really can't say much more without possible spoileriness, so I'll just say it is an outstanding story and I am champing at the bit to go get the second book (which is already out!!!), but am making myself wait until I finish the rest of my little stack and finally deal with the last Wheel of Time tome. (which sort of makes me feel like I'm putting my old dog down.)

Good to know! This has been on and off my list for a while, your review is planting it firmly back on. I was worried it was too much gruesome and no actual substance.

I had also been looking into this series but read something about what the main character does that turned my stomach so never bothered to get the book. I do not know whether excellent writing and story can overcome aversion to a main character for me. I decided against it, but now your review makes me torn about it. lol

Is the main character really that bad? From the reviews I was expecting a teenage Gregor Clegane but I just didn't get that. At the start I kind of liked him but his incessant moaning wore me down and I lost interest. I thought he was more like a spiteful child as opposed to anything truly evil. I also found the book to be a lot less gruesome than it was portrayed by a lot of people. Having said that I thought it had an original feel and that is quite something in this genre. I may actually try and finish the series one day.
