Anyone else reading this one? I enjoyed the two previous books of the Gentlemen Bastard's series, and this one is definitely entertaining. It got off to a slowish start (for me anyway) and is really hitting its stride just prior to the half way mark, which is where I had to leave off and get back to work. *s*
I am so glad that Scott Lynch was able to overcome his health issues and be able to continue with this series. Hope he feels well and able to write many more! _________________ All the DO needs is a good, old fashioned WoT spanking |

I just clicked Buy last night. I'm going to start reading it later today, I hope. Gotta finish some other stuff (volunteer work) first. |

It is next on my list!!! I can't wait to start but I want it to last. I feel like it going to be a long time before this series is finished. |

I'm about half way thru as well, after doing a reread of the first two. I swear Lynch writes the best cursing in all of fantasydom. Also... I wasn't pronouncing Sabetha as "Beth" so her name sits wrong in my head now. |

I was having that same issue with Sabetha's name as well. At almost 70% done, and this has been the most enjoyable Locke book yet for me. The following contains spoilers through page 399.
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) It did take a while to get rolling. Locke's illness dragged on, and the young Locke sections were more engaging then the main, current time line plot. Until the bondsmagi election scam starts up...then things take off. The young GB section where they finally go off to be actors is awesome too. In the first two books, the current adventure was easily the best part, with the shifts to young Locke irritating, since it broke into the action and took me out of that storyline. Here, both story lines are almost equally fun. For me, the current time line is still a bit more entertaining.
The part where Locke and Jean 'jump ship' during the storm was hilarious. And this line (on page 393)had me rolling... Locke's reply to Patience voicing her displeasure goes: "My disinterest in your bullshit is so tangible you could make bricks out of it." I bet the bondsmagi have never been spoken to in such a way, lol.
The relationship between Locke and Jean is golden...love them both in this novel.
Locke and Jean have been on the defensive for the election scheme since Sabetha got a head start and because Locke loses focus where she is concerned. Looks like they are going on the offensive now though, and I can't wait to see the chaos.

Good Googly Moogly.
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) I'm not finished but I hope Patience is spinning a tale worthy of a Gentleman Bastard 'cause I did NOT see that coming. Body swap? Seriously? |

Contains spoilers to the end of the book...
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) I didn't see that coming either DragonQueen. I probably should have reread the other books first as I didn't really recall his lack of memories as a child prior to being part of the thief gang (before being sold to Chains that is).
But the real shocker for me was the very end with Falconer. Yuck...he needs to freaking die, although I wasn't too fussed about him killing Mommy Dearest.
The only parts that irritated me was the continued on again off again aspect of Locke and Sabetha...yes, on one level I can certainly understand why she left the final time, but the keep them apart is feeling very contrived to me.
Still...excellent book!

Spoilers to the end..
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) I liked it but some of it felt contrived. The main problem I have is Sabetha. She heard Patience's explanation to Locke about what he supposedly was and why he maybe wanted a red head. I thought she had come to terms with all of that to some extent by the end of the book so why walk out after seeing the painting? She was ok enough to finally hook up with him again. Locke clearly wasn't remembering anything from his past life and who knows if that part is even true. After everything they've been thru I hate it that she ran. Again.
And the Falconer. Whew talk about a batpoop crazy bad guy. I wasn't sorry Patience got comeuppance. That seems to be a big theme in these books. She should have known that her son was rotten thru and thru tho and gone ahead and killed him when she could. She had to know he'd figure out something to get power back. And double tap. Just to be sure.
All in all a fun ride. I love Locke and Jean's partnership. Additionally, I feel compelled to improve my vocabulary and employ needlessly large words whenever the eventuality arises. And bump my creative cursing up a notch! Love the dialogue!!!

Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) The red hair thing seemed out of the blue to me, even though it had been remarked upon in the flash back sections of the book. It just seemed like the author really stretched to find a way to keep them apart.
As for Falconer...he had been completely out of it for three years and in a half hour gets control of his magic enough for him to use a lot of power to kill his mom...seemed a bit too quick for me, but he will make a good psycho mage nemesis for Locke.
You mentioned the dialogue, and I agree, it was great! Very natural banter between Locke and Jean and Sabetha too. And the twins cracked me up no end. I hope the next book doesn't take as long to get done as this one (Lynch had some awful issues to deal with, poor guy) as this novel not only was a fun installment, but also a great set up for the next adventures. _________________ All the DO needs is a good, old fashioned WoT spanking |

It's on my shelve. The problem is, that I started reading the Dresden Files
a couple of weeks back....
And I need to be reading the november book club thingy too.... So I guess
Republic of Thieves has to wait a month or so.
I really liked the first two novels, so I am looking forward to read this one.

Hey there Sal! Reading The Dresden Files is not a 'problem', hehe. I love that series and am so looking forward to the next one, which will most likely be out April-ish. He is almost done writing it.
If you liked the first two Locke books, then I feel you will certainly enjoy this installment! Lots of good action and fun! _________________ All the DO needs is a good, old fashioned WoT spanking |

Finally finished! I really liked it, it was just as good as the other two in series which is a difficult feat I think! Usually the middle books in a series tend to drag a bit and although this one did have a bit of a feel of set up for what is coming next it was very well done and no drag.
I think I enjoyed the flash back story better than the present day story, but I loved how they fit together so well. Also I laughed out loud many times for this book, basically I love the Sanza brothers. I was a little worried about finally meeting Sabetha because of how she has been built up in the previous books, but she fits right in with other characters and the previously build up (keeping in mind it is from Locke) fits right in too.
Now some spoilers!
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) I don't know how I feel about the Locke really being some mage that took over someone else's body? I am not ready to believe that whole story, but maybe parts of it are true? Definitely do not trust Patience. Also along those lines, everyone assumes Sabetha left at the end because of the picture with the red haired person in it. I'm not sure that was it since didn't Locke and Jean unwrap the picture? And also Patience mentioned the red hair before when she first explained but Sabetha came back after that even. I think maybe Patience told her something else entirely, maybe something about her own past?
I am afraid for our heroes because the Falconer is back (with a vengeance)! I feel like they got lucky beating him before and won't be able to again. Maybe this is where Locke has some latent mage powers or something? Patience said no, but she also didn't think the Falconer would be able to return to power. I am scared for Jean with his red name, he is my favorite :(
I can't wait for the rest! Hopefully with the time off Scott Lynch has a bit of a head start on the others. I saw on his Wikipedia page that he already has names for the other books and I heard a rumor that he said Bug is going to feature heavily in one of them! I want to know more about Father Chains too. I really like the flash back/present day format. |

Howdy folks, long time since I posted, hope you are all doing well. I Loved books one and two but I am half way through this one and, well, I am finding it to be hard work. Not much happening and, well, the plot in general seems a little odd, contrived even. Maybe it will improve in the second half. I hope so because good fantasy is hard to come by nowadays and I had very high hopes for this series. _________________ A bustle in your hedgerow..... |

Keep on Allessan. Spoiler through the first 1/4 of the book below...
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) After they get the poison out of Locke's system and get to the election, things pick up. The 'past' plot I found to be very entertaining.
It was a fun read for me...I really enjoyed it. I had been reading some pretty bad books right before though, so maybe reading a decent author made it seem even better. *g* _________________ All the DO needs is a good, old fashioned WoT spanking |

The quality of the writing is still very good. The dialogue is as sharp as ever, it's just a bit on the slow side. I want to see the wicked sisters having some fun! I love Jean Tannen, great character. I had a tear in my eye when Delmastro died. The big fella didn't deserve that.
I will take your word that it improves and keep reading! _________________ A bustle in your hedgerow..... |

Haha, I know what you mean, it can get a little fruity at times.
Thanks for the welcome. I kept meaning to come on but, to be honest, I have had a terrible year reading wise. I have lost count of the amount of books I have started and given up on. There was a time when I finished every book - good or bad - but I just don't have that kind of attention span any longer. I guess it must be old age creeping up on me.
It is quiet on here, where is everyone? _________________ A bustle in your hedgerow..... |

It's been quiet here of late.
What books were you finding yourself starting/stopping? I have a similar situation, but eventually have been plowing through. It just tales longer and then I have less books read in a year. I used to read almost 100 books a year but those days are long gone!
Oh and the swearing is the best swearing in a book. *g* There should be an award category for it. _________________ All the DO needs is a good, old fashioned WoT spanking |

I think a lot of the old regulars just got really busy with real life. A lot of us had babies around the same time and didn't have time to read. I have a lot more time so would love to revive the place. I am even doing a lot of reading these days. I should just post about what I'm reading. |
