This thread is for discussion of the book The Woodcutter by Kate Danley, up to the end of page 51 in my trade paperback copy (end of chapter 9).

I am not really sure how much I am liking this book yet...I think this is the set up portion, so I still don't have a good grip on how this world works. It is very atmospheric for sure, and I do like that. I don't like how people are referred to as titles, rather than names...it seems a little forced. But that is minor.

I do like where this is headed, I think it will turn out to be a cool play on the fairy tales we all know. Time...and the next chapters will tell!

I was not liking the writing style in the first few (brief) chapters and was a bit concerned that I wouldn't be getting into this book. The author seemed to be trying to hard to paint the scene and the similes/metaphors/descriptors seemed forced. I also didn't really like how she repeated awkward phrases "ten years and ten years more" etc. Oh - and I didn't like how Cinderella was described as a "woman no older than 16". Woman?? I think girl would have been more appropriate and more tragic.

Despite that, I definitely started to get into the book and the premise. Very cool - sounds like the cycle repeats itself? That the girl in the red cape has come over and over, in different forms, and sometimes is saved, sometimes not. So Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and the queen of the fairies so far and we've barely started. Want to know more about the pixie dust trade - that's new for me.

So my impression so far is that the author is trying desperately to be Catherynne Valente, but failing miserably. Hopefully things will improve, but there have been rather few positives in my book so far. The story hasn't grabbed me, the language doesn't flow, and the mix of drugs and fairies just seemed forced.

It gets better, right?.

I really need to figure out how to tell page numbers on my Kindle. I think I'm the last one reading, though, so hopefully no spoilers. I love the atmosphere and this could be something really great. But. . . I don't think the author really knows where she is going. It feels like she's doing vignettes instead of a whole novel.
