This thread is for discussion of the book The Woodcutter by Kate Danley, up to the end of page 105 in my trade paperback copy (end of chapter 31).

I really hoped this book would grow on me, but it hasn't. It feels like the author is trying way to hard to give the story that etherial, fairy tale quality but it comes across as forced in my opinion. The biggest flaw is that the characters are not fleshed out at all, even The Woodcutter, who is the protagonist.

Plus, just about every mainstream fairy tale character has been thrown out here in the first 105 pages plus Odin and the King and Queen of the Faeries too.

So, while I will finish it, I admit I am deeply disappointed in it.

I haven't read your post yet Alle. I'm so slow reading this book because I was also re-reading Dan Brown's Robert Langdon books at the same time (I'm not sure why I got so into them, I've read them before!).

Anyway, I just logged on to write - who is the Gentleman? I don't recognize that story... Didn't want to forgot that point as I won't be able to read more until tomorrow. I shall return!

Good question Lannie....I don't know that he is a character from a tale at all...I don't recognize The Woodcutter either for that matter.

ah, now i'm quite different from you Alle. I got way more into the book in this section and want to keep going. I completely agree though about all the characters not being fleshed out - the people he meets are on the page for 2 pages at most. We are getting little bits and pieces of the Woodcutter's history though - how he met his wife, that he was born of the wood and not a woman, how his child will find him and not be born... Very little though.

It does feel like it is a series of short stories mashed together versus a novel though. Still I'm intrigued.

That is a very good point bout how it is like several short stories stitched together.

It is a bit disjointed though....I guess those magic beans he gave away worked fast since the next thing we know, the stalk is fully grown to the Cloud Kingdom. I mean not much time has passed at all.

Hmmm, I've enjoyed this second part a bit more than the first one. I guess I'm either getting adjusted to the writing style, or it has changed for the better. Still, this is a far cry from brilliant. I'll continue and see where it goes, but I'm already thinking about returning to my Dresden Files re-read.

Heh, I think you should finish it Mikey, although I can certainly understand how a Dresden book is more appealing!
